Photos are circulating around the Greek press of a giant mushroom found by a resident of Argos Orestikos, western Macedonia, in a forest area of the community of Zoni Voio.

The rare mushroom, which weighs more than 8kg, was found by local Michalis Lalos, when he visited the region for a few days for the 15 August celebrations reports Ditikos Tipos. Walking around the area he stumbled across the mushroom and collected it.

In total, the mushroom weighs 8kg and 150 grams.

Mr Lalos carried the mushroom back to the village where it drew attention of locals and summer visitors alike – and photos of it have been doing the rounds in the local press since then.

The area is known for its dozens of mushroom species though the recent find was rare due to its size. Last year, Nikos Panayiotopoulos, a lover of wild mushrooms, found a calvatia gigantea mushroom in the region which weighed 4,230 kilograms.
