Most Northern Territorians have had their say on council polls, with postal votes are still being received until 10 September.

And while official election results will not be declared until Monday, 13 September, a Greek win is already apparent.

Darwin’s Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis is claiming re-election for a second four-year term.

Mr Vatskalis was leading on first preferences, with a 56 per cent of votes counted as of Sunday afternoon.

Following in second place, opponent Amye Un had just over 3,400 votes with the Greek Australian counting over 15,000.

On Saturday night, Mr Vatskalis stated “humbled” to be re-elected in a social media post.

“I thank you all the voters for realising my vision for a greener and cooler Darwin.”

True to his heritage, he made sure to also celebrate his victory in ancient Greek style, in a separate post.

Born in Cephalonia in 1957, Mr Vatskaliis the first Greek in Darwin’s history to be elected as the city’s Lord Mayor.

“The role of the Lord Mayor is like chairing a board of directors. You offer leadership, work with the communities and carry out ceremonial functions,” he told Neos Kosmos in a recent interview.
