British Prime Minister Boris Johnson he called on the world to raise awareness using a phrase in ancient Greek.

He quoted a phrase from Sophocles’ Antigone, as he once again showed his love for the history of Greece.

“Sophocles had said”ο τὰ δεινὰ οὐδὲν ἀνθρώπο“. Man is “afflicted” and the word “frightening” is not a correct translation for the word “afflicted”. What Sophocles meant is that the human species is wonderful. “It’s scary, but it’s also admirable,” he said.

Boris Johnson used the phrase from Antigone.

Boris Johnson’s dedication to ancient Greek is a given, with him regularly studying, as he has pointed out many times, ancient Greek writings. When he officially took over as Prime Minister he placed a bust of Pericles in a prominent position to be visible to all.

Eight years ago audienceς in Melbourne were completely surprised by an incredible performance when Boris Johnson broke into Homeric Greek and used an extract from  “The Iliad”.
