The state of Victoria recorded another daily tally on the brink of 2,000 COVID-19 infections.

Following Saturday’s record-breaking 1,965 cases, Sunday marked a slight decrease down to 1,890 cases, while five further deaths have taken the death toll of the current Delta outbreak to 905.

Αuthorities anticipate for the month of October to be marked by a rise in infections and are awaiting updating modelling to be released by the Burnet institute next week.

“At this point in time, we are on track in terms of hospitalisations and case numbers,” deputy health secretary Kate Matson told reporters on Saturday when asked whether Victoria is expected to reach 3,000 cases in the coming days.

If this happens, the Australian state is likely to surpass the daily infections recorded in Greece at the moment.

The national Greek tally for Saturday was 2,197 new infections, a drop from 2,324 the day before with a death toll of 36.

According to late September estimates, over 65 per cent of the adult population in Greece were fully vaccinated, while in Victoria more than 57 per cent of the eligible population is currently fully vaccinated.
