Melbourne teams, City and Victory, and Central Coast Mariners came away with all three points from their games, while the derby between Western Sydney and Sydney FC that promised much, proved a goalless, low-key affair in the evening drizzle.

The new-look Isuzu UTE A-League launched on Friday evening at AAMI Park with last season’s champions, Melbourne City, beating visitors Brisbane Roar 2-1. It proved a close-run thing, with the Roar ‘s Kawi Trewin’s header into the nets in the 80th minute ruled as off side. The champions had gone 2-0 ahead in the first half. The Roar started the second half with a more positive attitude and pulled one back through Luke Ivanovic, but it was not enough to alter the result.

On Saturday, Tony Popovic’s Melbourne Victory travelled to Geelong to take on Western United. Victory’s Roderick Miranda gave his team the lead in the 75th minute from a Jake Brimmer pass. It was enough for Victory to collect all three points.

Later in the evening, Perth Glory hosted Adelaide United who drew first blood in the 22nd minute through Kusini Yengi. Glory’s reply came through Bruno Fornaroli five minutes before the end of the first half. Both teams found the net in the second half only for their efforts to be ruled out.
