Two Greek-Australian women have committed suicide, according to data given to Neos Kosmos.

One of the cases was a young woman who just turned 20 and committed suicide a fortnight ago, whereas in a separate incident, an older woman also put an end to her life.

Both the families, who reside in Melbourne, are distraught.

Official data shows that despite the current situation, the number of suicide cases in Australia did not rise in 2020 in relation to 2019.

There were 488 suicide cases in Victoria from the start of the year until September, the same number as the year before. In Victoria, the number of suicides in 2019 was at 721 and 713 for 2020.

In 2020, 3,139 people put an end to their lives in comparison to 3,318 in 2019.

Despite the pandemic and lockdown restrictions resulting in job loss and business closures enhancing people’s stress levels around the world, there was not a huge rise noted in the global suicide rate according to official data.
