After several years of lead up work by the Greek Community of Melbourne, finally a position for a ‘Hellenic Senior Lecturer in Global Diasporas’ at the University of Melbourne has been advertised.

This opportunity has been realised thanks to the lobbying efforts of Nikos and Bill Papastergiadis as Melbourne, being a global hub of multiculturalism where one of the largest and most vibrant Greek communities abroad resides will benefit from such a role. This new position is supported by philanthropic and Federal government funding. It provides a unique opportunity for an outstanding scholar to lead research in the field of global diaspora studies, coordinate and deliver teaching on aspects of Hellenic culture and cosmopolitanism, and engage with the wider public on the relevance of Hellenism and its contributions to contemporary understandings of multiculturalism and the experience of diasporic communities.

Melbourne is home to one of the most culturally diverse and harmonious communities. This position will allow research to be undertaken to gain contemporary understandings of the dynamics of multiculturalism, to understand diaspora identities beyond ethnicity, and to also examine cross-disciplinary approaches to interpretations on the evolution of diasporic communities.

This position is being advertised globally for the successful candidate will leave their mark in years to come. The appointee will also be involved in establishing teaching and research partnerships with higher education institutions and relevant cultural organisations elsewhere in Australia and overseas. They will undertake teaching and research in their discipline or related areas. They will make a significant contribution to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level, and undertake research appropriate to their discipline.
