The Hellenic Art Theatre returns as part of the 40th anniversary of the Greek Festival of Sydney with its new production ‘The Promised Woman’.

The play premiered at The Greek Theatre – Mantouridion in Marrickville on Saturday evening 26 March to a sold out theatre audience.

“I myself have been going to Hellenic Art Theatre shows since I was a kid, this was their best show yet,” said Neos Kosmos contributor and writer Billy Cotsis.

“A real positive for the Greek language and also for younger audience members to learn what many women went through in the early years of migration.”

Originally titled ‘Η Λογοδοσμένη’ (I Logodosmeni), the play written by Theodore Patrikareas and directed by Stavros Economidis set in 1960 at a boarding house in Sydney’s Newtown housing European migrants.

The main character, Antigoni arrives for an arranged marriage, only to be rejected by her intended husband, Telly.

Refusing to be sent back to Greece, she finds independence, adjusting to a new life in a new country as a single woman, shaping her own existence and building relationships.

Produced by Evelyn Tsavalas the performance is in Greek with English subtitles.

The performance will run until 17 April, at 7.30pm-9.30pm and at 5pm-7pm on Sundays.
