Member for Hotham Clare O’Neil has announced that, if elected, Labor will allocate $2 million in funding for Oakleigh Cannons Football Club.

The MP said that Labor will invest towards the upgrade of facilities located at Jack Edwards Reserve to ensure greater participation and community engagement.

“This commitment from Labor will help upgrade the changerooms for players, umpires and the public; upgrade storage facilities and provide more seating for local fans,” Ms O’Neil said.

“It will also allow the Club to accommodate more women’s soccer teams.”

Initially established in 1972 by a few young Soccer enthusiasts, the Oakleigh Cannons has grown dramatically in recent years. It is the only National Premier League team that houses both elite level teams and community football at their ground. But the facilities have not been able to keep pace with the growing demand.

“The Oakleigh Cannons is a fantastic local club and one that I’m extremely proud to represent in the Federal Parliament,” she said explaining that the funding will be provided as soon as possible in the first term of a Labor Government.

“Making sure that young people have the facilities and opportunities to get involved with sport is so important. Its’ important to ensure that Australian soccer continues to develop and improve. I’m so proud that Labor can play a part in the Cannon’s exciting plans for the future,” Ms O’Neil added.
