Maria Sakkari has made it into the third round at Wimbledon on Thursday morning (Australia time) after defeating Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets by 6-4, 6-3.
The World No.5 dominated the match from the beginning, securing an easy win even though the Bulgarian serves some hard-hitting points.
Sakkari was able to break Tomova twice in the next round and moved fast and efficiently to not allow her opponent a chance.
She will now have to face German Tatjana Maria on Friday, an important match that could see her through to the Round of 16 for the first time.
“I’m just enjoying my game on the grass because there were certain people saying I could never play on the grass, but I believe that I really can because I’m a good mover, I have a good serve,” Sakkari said after the match.
Thanasi Kokkinakis on the other hand has not been so lucky, facing Novak Djokovic who defeated him in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
Top seed Djokovic’s defence and attack tactics were superior, leaving Kokkinakis to say that he “just wasn’t able to execute.”
“Wasn’t great from my end. It was pretty one-way traffic. It was frustrating. But, you know, yeah, got chopped today,” he admitted.
Nevertheless, Kokkinakis will now join his favourite mate Nick Kyrgios on Thursday in the best-of-five-sets doubles action.
Even though Kyrgios made it through to the next round earlier the same day, his dramatic reactions towards the umpire, a lineswoman and the audience could see him get fined by the All England Club. The decision is yet to be made.
