Nick Kyrgios’s US Open dream has come to an end after a five-set thriller against Karen Khachanov with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 defeat in three hours and 39 minutes.

Kyrgios, who previously defeated World No1 Daniil Medvedev, was pushed out of the tournament by the 27th-seeded Russian who will now face fifth seed Casper Ruud in the semi-finals.

In his post match interview Kyrgios expressed his disappointment but acknowledged Khachanov’s performance stating “I’m obviously devastated. But all credit to Karen. He’s a fighter. He’s a warrior. I thought he served really good today. Honestly probably the best server I played this tournament, to be honest, the way he was hitting his spots under pressure.”

Immediately after the match after just having shaken the umpires hand Kyrgios was unable to control his disappointment and temper by repeatedly smashing his racquet on the court in rage.

The result means no Australians are left in the men’s and women’s singles draw after Ajla Tomljanović lost her quarter-final against fifth seed and Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur.
