All eyes are on Sydney FC and Western Sydney this weekend wherein both sides will be desperate to emerge victorious in the first derby inside the newly refurbished Allianz Stadium.

The Sky Blues go up against the Wanderers in the headline game of the A-League’s sixth round, with lots of attention on veteran Milos Ninkovic, who is set to play his first derby since switching to the Red and Black colours.

Melbourne City is looking to down Arthur Papas’ Newcastle Jets as they look to go into the World Cup break unbeaten while Melbourne Victory has a difficult challenge against rivals Adelaide United, who are coming off back-to-back wins.

Western United is striving to snap their winless run in their match with Wellington Phoenix, as Central Coast takes on Macarthur FC in a bid to record their third straight success.

Adelaide hosts the Original Rivalry clash against Melbourne Victory in the round’s opening on Friday night, with each team looking to solidify their positive starts to the campaign.

Both teams are coming off impressive triumphs last weekend and three points for either side will do wonders for their confidence as they enter the World Cup break.

Melbourne City travels to face Newcastle on Saturday evening with the aim of protecting their unbeaten streak and officially entering the break as league leaders.

Arthur Papas’ outfit will have to muster all their strength to overturn their recent form (two consecutive losses) and cause an upset against the competition’s most in-form club.

Sydney FC is preparing for an enormous derby which has more at stake than just points, with this being an opportunity for bragging rights as well as avenge their opening round derby loss to Melbourne Victory.

The fixture also has the massive plotline of former Sky Blue Milos Ninkovic’s return, with both him and Sydney FC keen to ensure victory in their first meeting since he crossed the city divide.

Sydney manager Steve Corica assured that no respect has been lost for Ninkovic, though they expect a “hostile atmosphere” against him and their crosstown rivals.

“We have a lot of respect for Milos and what he achieved at the club, but he is the enemy now,” Mr Corica said to media on Thursday.

“It’s a derby, the fans are passionate about the club and we want to put on a performance for them.”

Wellington is aiming to build on last week’s victory as they prepare for a visit from the struggling Western United on Sunday afternoon.

The reigning champions sit in bottom place with just a single point, making every match that passes must-win as they desperately hope to kickstart their season.

Central Coast clashes with Macarthur in the round’s closing game and the Gosford side will be keen to deliver a win for their home supporters and go into the World Cup break in great spirits.
