The Greek Community of Melbourne, the Hellenic Writers’ Association of Australia and the Greek-Australian Cultural League are hosting a lecture by author Dimitris Tzoumacas at the Greek Centre this Sunday, 12 March.

Athens-born Tzoumacas lived in Paris during the dictatorship period, where he studied social sciences on a CIMADE scholarship.

In 1974 he immigrated to Australia and later was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney. He worked as a journalist for Australian newspapers and magazines and taught at the Universities of New South Wales and Macquarie Sydney (1990-98).

In the periods from 1995-1998 and 2000-2006 he served in the Press Office of the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney. After his transfer to Athens, he was director of the Journalism Directorate of the General Secretariat of Information (former Press Ministry) until his retirement.

He is the author of several books: among the best known is ‘Merry Sydney’ (1988), which has been taught at all three tiers of Australian Education and the author has been repeatedly honoured with grants from the Australian Council of Arts.

Other more recent books include Immigrant Discourse and Outsider Culture (2018), Nicolas Calas: Hermaphrodite in the Garden of Letters (2018), which was derived from his PhD thesis, and his latest work The Tiger and the Chameleon (2022).
