Melbourne’s Greek community is mourning the death of Despina Mouratides who, according to available data, was the first female psychiatrist of Greek origin in Australia.

Well known by thousands among Melbourne’s Greek diaspora, she provided critical medical services in Greek language to a community that was often marginalised, especially in the field of medical care, due to the language barrier.

Inconsolable, her only son 36-year-old Filippos Kapoyiannis told Neos Kosmos the loss has left him devastated.

“There are no words. The void it leaves us is irreplaceable. Our only consolation is the respect and love that the community had for my mother.”

In light of Dr Mouratides’ passing, Panagiotis Iasonidis, a family friend of the distinguished Greek Australian psychiatrist sent the following letter to the offices of Neos Kosmos.

“Dr Despina Mouratides, has left for the endless journey to eternity. In addition to being a top scientist who served her field honorably and with dedication, she was also an authentic soul, a soul who helped many expatriates who had mental health problems.”

“Of Pontic origin, Despina stayed true to her roots, while never letting the endless scientific excellence she received change her beautiful character. She left her scientific and personal mark.”

“At the same time, those of us who had the privilege to know her up close, to know her personally, knew that in her we had a dear friend.”

“My deepest condolences to her only son, Fillipos, to whom I wish strength and courage following the loss of his mother. I wish Despina well on her journey to paradise, where she will join her beloved husband Panagiotis and her loving parents.”

“May her memory be eternal and may almighty God rest her soul,” it concludes.
