Following the success of last year’s event, Point Cook’s Greek community have joined forces once again in an initiative led by Kalliopi Vassilopoulou, to bring “Greek Family Fun Day” back to the suburb on Saturday 25 March.

“The event’s aim is to bring together local community and celebrate all things Greek,” Vassilopoulou says “through our food, music, dance and the range of activities we have planned.”

This year, youngsters (and the young at heart) can try their hand at painting their own traditional Easter eggs, colour and make their own ‘Tsarouchi’, take part in sports events inspired by the Olympics and much more; all while learning about Greek culture.

“Last year’s event highlighted, that apart from physical isolation people experienced due to Covid, they felt isolated within their own communities.”

“We’d hear comments like ‘we didn’t know there were so many Greeks in Point Cook,” Vassilopoulou explains.

But it’s not just Greeks, as with last year attendees can expect a welcoming environment inviting people of all cultural backgrounds to come together as an expression of the multiculturalism our society holds so dear.

“It’s great to see people of another heritage try out Greek dances, learn about the Olympics by having a go at the games, learn more about our flag and our Easter traditions.”

“We love hearing comments like ‘we felt included even though we’re not Greek ourselves,” Vassilopoulou says.

“We Greeks have such a storied and rich history and we’re very proud to share it with the wider community, providing an experience that’s not only unifying and inclusive, but also educational and fun.”

Attendees can certainly expect a day full of fun at Point Cook’s ‘Greek Family Fun Day’, the event is scheduled to be held between 10:30 am and 3 pm.

Keep an eye out for Honey Dee Loukoumades, who just like last year, will be handing out their delicious, freshly made Greek delights free of charge in support of the event.

And for those seeking out a traditional performance, the ‘Pegasus’ dance group will be there to entertain all comers.
