Greek welfare provider PRONIA has congratulated Justice Emilios Kyrou on his appointment as Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).

Justice Kyrou has been serving as PRONIA’s Patron for he last nine years. He has twice received the Greek-Australian Association’s Hellenic Distinction Award and in 2015 was honoured with the President of Greece’s Gold Cross of the Order of Honour.

Most recently his contributions to the judiciary and broader community were recognised on Australia Day this year, when he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.

An acclaimed expert in the area of administrative law, Justice Kyrou has taken leadership initiatives throughout his legal career, including that of becoming the founding editor of the law-reporting service Victorian Administrative Law in 1985.

PRONIA’s CEO, Mrs Tina Douvos-Stathopoulos also commented, “Since 2014, PRONIA is honoured to have the support of His Honour Justice Kyrou as our valued Patron. Today, we congratulate Judge Kyrou on this monumental achievement, and are proud to be represented by such a distinguished figure in our community”.

Justice Kyrou, is expected to lead the AAT during a period of reform, following the government announcement in December 2022 for the establishment of a new administrative review body replacing the AAT. He will then serve as the inaugural president of the new body. The proposed term of his appointment is five years
