Young prospects Nectarios Triantis and Lucas Mauragis have been selected for Australia’s U-23 side at the Maurice Revello Tournament.

Australia is set to battle it out against Qatar, Mexico and a Mediterranean select team featuring players from professional clubs in the Mediterranean region who were born 2001-2004.

The (training match) tournament is set to include 12 nations divided into three groups and will feature the Olyroos’ long-awaited participation, having been scheduled for the 2021 edition that was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Triantis will miss the first game due to his late arrival after representing Central Coast in the heart of defence in their A-League championship win last Saturday, though Mauragis will be available for selection from the opening contest.

Along with Triantis, his teammate Jacob Farrell and Melbourne City’s Marco Tilio and Callum Talbot will not feature for the Qatar clash after they all played in the A-League Grand Final.

Newcastle United’s 18-yr-old talent Garang Kuol stars among the 24-man squad wherein he will reunite with his older brother, Alou Kuol, who currently plays for Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart.

Another notable name is Brighton’s Cameron Peupion, who made his Premier League debut this season, with the overall team consisting of 13 A-league players, showcasing some very healthy Australian top-flight representation.

The tournament, which is run independently from FIFA, will serve as excellent preparation ahead of the Olyroos’ September AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 qualifiers.

The top three-placed sides at the Asian Cup will qualify for the Paris Olympic Games next year, adding to the importance of Australia’s young crop synergising well as a team.

The other teams at the tournament include Group A’s France (current champions), Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, along with Group C’s Morocco, Ivory Coast, Japan and Panama.

Each side is guaranteed to play a minimum of four matches across the 12 days, with matches designed to place every nation from 12th to champions.
