An inquest into the death of 17-year-old Brighton Grammar student James Tsindos in 2021 will begin this Friday.
Tsindos died from anaphylaxis after eating a burrito bowl he ordered online, with his death shocking the Greek and Cypriot community in Melbourne, with news also spreading to local media in Cyprus.
James was taken to Holmesglen Private Hospital by ambulance after suffering an allergic reaction to the food. His condition worsened and a “code blue” was called after he went into cardiac arrest.
He was transferred to The Alfred hospital intensive care unit, where his life support was turned off five days later, on June 1, 2021.
Tsindos had a history of allergic rhinitis and asthma.
The case will sit before State Coroner Sarah Gerbert, to determine whether the medical care provided to James on May 27, 2021 following his ingestion of a meal containing cashews was appropriate and whether there are any prevention opportunities arising from the circumstances of James’ death.
Earlier this year it was reported an inquest into online food orders is underway with a review into whether food delivery companies should list ingredients.
