Victoria recorded no new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 as the state prepares for a further easing of lockdown restrictions, however Sydney remains on high alert following a second new case of coronavirus was detected in Bondi, in the city’s eastern suburbs.

NSW Health said that the first identified case in Sydney is a driver who transports international flight crews.

Jane Halton, chair of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness, told Today the case showed how important it was for frontline workers to be vaccinated as it is understood the driver was not vaccinated.

“We all know that there is vaccine available for people and anybody who is coming into direct contact with people who have come from offshore who may well themselves be infectious,” Ms Halton said.

“It amazes me these people are not vaccinated. We have the capacity to protect people.”

Genome sequencing and contact tracing are underway to find the source of the virus.

Last night, two locations at the East Village Shopping Centre in Zetland, a bus route, several sites in Bondi Junction and a car wash in Redfern were added to the list of exposure sites.
