New light was cast on the gruesome killing of British mother Caroline Crouch, 20, who grew up in Greece and was found brutally murdered.

Her husband, 32-year-old pilot Babis Anagnostopoulos, alleged he and his wife had been tied up by burglars in a brutal home invasion at their family home near Athens on 11 May.

A statement by the Hellenic Police on Twitter said:  “Investigation of the homicide of a 20-year-old native that took place on 11 May, 2021 in Glyka Nera. The perpetrator is her 33-year-old husband, who confessed to his act.”

On Thursday, the husband was flown in by helicopter from the Aegean island of Alonissos to the police headquarters in Athens for more than eight hours of questioning, say media reports, after being brought in as the “only eyewitness to the crime”

Local media reports that a tracker, containing smartwatch data, contradicted the husband’s narrative that he had been tied up and gagged by three assailants. The data showed that he moved around the house, going from the attic to the basement. Furthermore, memory cards had been removed from the surveillance cameras, while unusual activity had been found on the suspect’s cellphone during the time he claimed to have been tied up.

The couple’s baby was at home at the time of the murder but was left unharmed.

Sources allege that Mr Anagnostopoulos told investigators that he killed his young wife after she threatened to leave him and take their infant with her. The same sources point to another person from the couple’s environment who has been called to testify.

It is alleged he confessed to staging the scene of the crime to back his story that his young wife was beaten and strangled by three robbers looking for cash and other valuables while he was tied to a chair, unable to help.

Mr Anagnostopoulos had initially told investigators he had revealed to burglars where the money was hidden but this did not stop them from shoving pieces of cloth in the young mother’s mouth before suffocating her.

Ms Crouch was born in Greece but had a British passport.
