Australia has struck gold twice today, with both the men’s and women’s rowing crews claiming nail-biting wins.

Lucy Stephan, Rosemary Popa, Jessica Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre made their way out onto the choppy waters of Toyko’s Sea Forest Waterway for the fours rowing finals.

The Aussie women, along with the Dutch seemed to have it in the bag early on, having broken away from the pack in the first strokes.

Stephan, Popa, Morrison and McIntyre really pulled through in the final moments, getting ahead of team Netherlands by a mere 0.34 seconds.

Popa shared her gratitude for everyone who had helped the team reach Toyko.

“Our fours have been just so brave, we’re just such a unit and have so much trust even though it was pretty hard conditions today,” she told Channel Seven.

Moments later the men took to the water for their race, with Alexander Purnell, Spencer Turrin, Jack Hargreaves and Alexander Hill representing Australia.

The men’s four managed to pull off an Olympic record along with their win, finishing with a time of 5 minutes, 42.76 seconds, ahead of Romania and Italy.

Players stood proudly on the podium, taking a quick photo with their masks off.

The decision to allow athletes on the Tokyo Olympics podium to remove masks from their faces for 30 seconds was made by the International Olympic Committee.
