The last day of the season proved a hard one to take for Hawthorn Spartans in their Round-14 game against visitors Old Xaverians at the Rathmines Reserve on Saturday.

The Spartans suffered one of the heaviest losses of the season with a score 148-23 to Old Xaverians who are second on the Premier Thirds log.

The team manager George Demetriou, said the leapfrogging of the team by two divisions had not helped in a season that was affected by COVID-19 disruptions and a long and constant injury list.

“In what was an unusual year impacted by COVID, a plethora of injuries, playing in a Section that was too high, it became a very challenging year” said Mr Demetriou.

“Full credit to all personnel, helpers, volunteers, playing group, and of course Coaches for their efforts through such a year.

“Even though the results didn’t go our way, we still were the best organised outfit in the competition, our training numbers were great and we always stayed positive – we could have quite easily dropped right off. We have a very special number of great people in this organisation, hence our sustainability.

“Let’s keep building here for next year, as we know we will regroup next year aggressively. All our Group are looking forward to playing next year and have a positive year in 2022.

Mr Demetriou cited the best players on the day as Tom Menzies, Mohammad Dabab , Lachie Derham, Theo Ktenas, Ash Mohandas, Tom Brikhia, John Farah and Jarryd Gaggin.
