Greek vocalist Tzeni Vanou, 75, has died of cancer at a Piraeus hospital.
Born Evgenia Vrachnou in Athens in 1939, Vanou turned to music after meeting composer Mimis Plessas, whom she considered to be her mentor. She began her singing career as a vocalist with the ERT light music orchestra in 1959.
Besides Plessas, Vanou worked closely with several Greek songwriters, including Mikis Theodorakis and Attik, while in the 1970-1980 period she became known for her ‘laiko’, popular Greek song, repertory.
