Iannis Xenakis’ impressive work Pleiades will be tackled by Australia’s oldest and foremost contemporary music ensemble, Synergy Percussion, at the Carriageworks in Sydney next month over two nights.

In many ways since its conception in 1978, this work has remained unchallenged as the most ambitious work for percussion ensemble ever written. A sound-world unlike anything before, ears will ring and brains will ache from processing the intricate patterns of the rhythms and sounds, while the audience’s eyes will be captivated by the synchronised flurry of movement as the performer’s hands dance across their instruments.

As a rare treat for audiences, Synergy Percussion will return once more, this time to present the world premiere of Anthony Pateras’ Beauty will be amnesiac or will not be at all. Pateras is among the most in-demand Australian composers of his generation.

Inspired by Xenakis’ Pleiades, this masterpiece is considered the most ambitious Australian concert percussion work, and a challenge to the monolith of its inspiration. Members of Synergy Percussion will be dispersed throughout the concert space on platforms, amongst six speakers angled in different directions.
Xenakis: Pateras: Synergy will take place at Carriageworks Sydney on Tuesday 22 April and Wednesday 23 April, for tickets visit www.synergypercussion.com
