It’s been a short but sweet visit for Greek International player Sotirios Kyrgiakos. This Sunday sees him play for the second and final time for Sydney Olympic against NPL team St George Giants.

It will be no secret that the former Liverpool star will be hoping to end his time in Australia with a win, and he could be lucky this time.

The fixture is kinder, with the Giants not being able to shake off pre-season problems. After a first round draw with APIA-Leichhardt, St George have struggled to make an impact and will rely heavily on last year’s NSW Mens 2 golden boot winner, Juan Chavez, to score the goals.

If the team has gelled well with Kyrgiakos, they’ll be able to disarm Chavez easily and create more opportunities for the Greek to score.
Kyrgiakos has been a gracious guest for Olympic, spending quality time at the Club coaching the youngsters and giving tips.

The coaching staff have been taken aback by his humble nature and are amazed at his ability.

“He gets stuck in, he talks, he organizes, he talks to the boys, pulls them aside individually and gives them a little bit of advice,” senior coach Grant Lee told Neos Kosmos two weeks ago.

The Greek community has flocked to see him in action and helped set crowd records in the NPL for the opening match two weeks ago.

Without a current club, it’ll be curious to see if his short presence in Australia has caught the eye of the A-League coaches that will be looking for some new blood after finals.

As a parting gift, Olympic will be hosting him a farewell dinner on Saturday and invite fans and friends to join them.

The event, A Big Greek Dance for our Big Greek Warrior will be held on April 5, from 7:30pm at Mytilenian House, 225 Canterbury Road, Canterbury

Tickets are $60.00 for adults and $45.00 for a child under 16 and includes food and entertainment.
