It was sweet revenge for Bentleigh Greens last week, as they toppled Northcote City who robbed them of the VPL title last year.

The Greens fought hard to secure a 2-3 win, that now sees Northcote City third last on the ladder. They’ve had a horrible start to the season, losing both opening games and crumbling under pressure.

Coach Goran Lozanovski says it’s been frustrating.

“It was disappointing to give away three goals,” he said about the round 2 loss on the FFV website.

“The biggest challenge in any coach’s job is to keep a clean sheet, but having given away three goals in each of your first two games, it’s hard for a coach to swallow.”

They take on rural team Ballarat Red Devils on Saturday, who managed to win in the same margin, 2-3 against fellow rural club Goulburn Valley Suns last week.

The win was the first for the club in their NPL season, and was achieved just seconds before the siren sounded.

Two goals from both sides were tucked into the net in the last minute, leaving fans shocked but enthused non the less.

With thrilling play like that, Northcote City could be in for a challenge at home.

Defeated Goulburn Valley Suns will take on Greek sponsored team Heidelberg United today, who mirrored the Suns, losing out in the last minutes of the game.

United were up against fellow Greek club Oakleigh Cannons last week and were neck and neck until an injury-time free kick from Oakleigh Cannon’s Dusan Bosnjak stole the draw away.

It hasn’t been a good start to the season for Heidelberg, who only just got promoted to the top tier.

They’ve fallen to VPL veterans South Melbourne and the Cannons but hope is still there to bounce back.

“I thought it was a great team effort,” Heidelberg coach George Katsakis said about the loss.

“It was a pity that certain things didn’t fall our way because I thought everyone’s work ethic and their work rate was phenomenal in that first half.’

The winning Oakleigh takes on another Greek club on Friday, Port Melbourne Sharks.

The Sharks didn’t have much luck when they came up against an in-form South Melbourne last week.

The Sharks carried the game in the first half, leading 2-1 but ran out of juice near the end, where South Melbourne capitalised with newly subbed players lobbing in two goals in the 64th minute.

South Melbourne, topping the ladder at the moment will be hoping for another win when they come up against Green Gully on Saturday.

They’ll have the winning advantage, as Green Gully failed to equalise against a strong Melbourne Knights.
