Greece won its second medal at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich, Switzerland on Sunday, with Louis Tsatoumas coming second in the long jump.

Briton Greg Rutherford won the event with a leap of 8.29 metres. Tsatoumas took silver with 8.15 metres, just one centimetre ahead of France’s Kafetien Gomis, who claimed bronze.

Tsatoumas said he put all his effort into his first jump as he was suffering from an ankle problem and knew he would not be able to perform well in the subsequent efforts.

“This medal is a great success for me,” said the 32-year-old Greek athlete, who received a congratulatory telegram from President Karolos Papoulias.

His is the second medal for Greece at these championships, after Katerina Stefanidi also won silver in the women’s pole vault.

Anzhelika Sidorova of Russia won the competition in dramatic style as she cleared 4.65 metres on her third and final attempt to move above Stefanidi, who had finished her competition with a best of 4.60 but was ahead on countback.

Russia’s Angelina Zhuk-Krasnova came third.

Stefanidi’s and Tsatoumas’ medals take the total medal count for Greece in the history of European Championships to 21. Stefanidi received a
congratulatory telegram from Greek president Karolos Papoulias.

Silver in Swimming Championships

Greece also claimed the silver in the team 5 kilometre event at the 32nd European Swimming Championships in Berlin last week.

The Greek team, consisting of Spyros Gianniotis, Antonis Fokaidis and Kalliopi Araouzou, came second with a time of 56:05.5.

The race was won by the Netherlands, with Germany taking bronze.

“The results in the individual events here were not very good for us,” said Gianniotis, according to Swimmingvortex.com

“But today we showed we could be strong as a team. We trained less this year as we are in the middle of the Olympic cycle: we will be better next year.”
