Australian comedian George Kapiniaris is moving on from the well-known RAA insurance ads where he played trouble-prone George, to a one-man gig at the 2015 Adelaide Fringe Festival.

The popular star of Acropolis Now, Wogs Out Of Work, Flying Doctors and Underbelly became a part of South Australian TV culture, with the RAA ads, created by KWP!, running for an impressive 11 seasons.

“The ads were a trendsetter, really. They were really ground-breaking and very South Australia-centric. My character was an icon around Adelaide,” he said.
Kapiniaris says his Fringe show End of Dark Days Trev! – a nod to his RAA co-star Trev – will hark on the “dark days all around us and all of the things we have to deal with in 2015”.

“This one-man show is really a way to say thank you and see you later to Adelaide.

“It’s a bit of a ‘where to next’ and finding my new identity. Will I be a real estate agent, a superhero…?”

In addition to raising a few laughs, Kapiniaris said part of the proceeds from his show on Wednesday, 18 February will go to South Australian fire-fighting funds in the wake of the recent Adelaide Hills bushfires.

“My character in the insurance ads was so unlucky. If I were still doing the ads, I’m sure I’d probably get the blame for the state being on fire too.”
End of Dark Days Trev! is on at the Rhino Room, 13 Frome Street Adelaide, from 10 to 19 February at 7.00 pm. Tickets $30.

The Adelaide Fringe Festival kicks off on 13 February and runs until 15 March.
