The Southern Aegean Regional Authority said it is going to pay 60 new doctors an extra 450 euros a month for three years to help cover the shortage of medics on many Cycladic and Dodecanese islands.
Authorities want the doctors to work at various local health centres and hospitals.
“Many small islands of 300 or even 1,000 inhabitants do not have a permanent doctor,” Southern Aegean Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos told Kathimerini.
“It is very difficult to live on an island without a doctor, especially if you have children or chronic health problems. Unfortunately, though, living on an island is not attractive for our doctors.”
