Olympiakos won its first Greek Cup in eight years, breaking Panathinaikos’ dominance of Greek basketball by beating the Greens 68-64 in a fiercely contested final at the Hellenikon indoor arena.
As expected, it proved to be a tense game with nothing to separate the two sides until the third quarter.
It was from half-time onwards that Olympiakos really turned it on, taking a 10-point lead at one point.
Panathinaikos reduced the difference to five points going into the final quarter but the Greens, who have been lack lustre in recent weeks losing three consecutive Euroleague matches, were unable to go the extra mile to turn the game around.
Fittingly, the winning free-throws were scored by Milos Teodosic, who was Olympiakos’s best player on the night with 22 points, five assists and just one turnover.
Childress told reporters after the game that there were still “two more to go,” as Olympiakos set their sights on the Euroleague and the domestic championship after picking up their first Greek Cup in eight years.
