With the issue of ageing high on Flinders University’s agenda, the institution is preparing to host the 3rd International Conference on Ageing in a Foreign Land.

Taking place across three days from 24 to 26 June, international and local guest speakers will present their findings regarding the needs of ageing migrants in Australia.

The focus will be on issues associated with language and cultural identity, along with service provisions for older populations living in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities.

Professor Michael Tsianikas from the Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics at Flinders University informed Neos Kosmos that at least 20 different ethnic communities will be represented at the conference.

“They’re trying to engage the community to discuss one of the major issues of Australia which is ageing, but most importantly CALD perspectives. There are common community themes like language, culture and spirituality,” he said.

Speaking at the conference will be Dr Alexander Kalache, president of the International Longevity Centre in Brazil, Professor Graeme Hugo AO, director of the University of Adelaide’s Australian Population, and Migration Research Centre and Joseph Caputo OAM, chair of the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Council of Australia (FECCA), along with various other notable speakers.

As an opportunity to advance knowledge surrounding the ageing experience in a foreign country while sharing personal experiences, the university welcomes the attendance and participation of academics, researchers, practitioners, policy makers, service providers and aged care workers.
