Greek new wave director Athina Rachel Tsangari has been named Film Society of Lincoln Centre’s (FSLC) 2015 Filmmaker in Residence.

During her residency, Tsangari will be working on completing her next film, a screwball action thriller, titled White Knuckles.

“I am looking forward to working on my new script, part of which is set in New York City, and to drawing inspiration from the city itself, camaraderie from its essential film community, and stimulation from the Film Society’s invigorating programming,” Tsangari said.

“It is always an invaluable gift when Xenia – the goddess of hospitality – and cinema join their graces and forces.”

Tsangari moved to Austin to study film directing after graduating from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with a BA in Comparative Literature, Philosophy, and Drama.

Her somophore directing effort in 2010, titled Attenberg, was followed by critical acclaim and won several awards at festivals worldwide.

It was also Greece’s Best Foreign Language Film submission for the 2012 Academy Awards.

Currently premiering at this year’s Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland is her latest feature, Chevalier; a buddy comedy.

Chevalier is also among the ten international films competing for the Heart of Sarajevo award at the Sarajevo Film Festival, taking place this August.

The plot revolves around the story of six men who decide to play a game while sailing the Aegean sea on a yacht.

FSLC launched the residency program in 2013 as an annual initiative to support emerging New York-based filmmakers.

François Truffaut, Pedro Almodóvar and Martin Scorsese are some of the prominent names introduced to American audiences via FSLC during the last four decades.
