Greek cuisine has been a popular food choice across Australia for decades.

While everyone has their own favourite spots to get the tastiest Greek feast, last week The Age Good Food Guide gave us a list of their Top 10 across Victoria.

As writer Anastasia Safioleas reaffirms, Greek cuisine extends far beyond the humble souvlaki, hence why the list features cheap eats along with restaurants and food stores.

So who made the cut?

Featuring in the Top 10 were Cretan favourite Elyros, along with what have come to be culinary institutions – Jim’s Greek Tavern, Pireaus Blues and Philhellene.

The Queen Victoria Market’s Big Vic Deli, renowned for its mouthwatering kefalograviera cheese, loukaniko sausages, kalamata olives and cumin-spiced pastourma also made the list as a favourite.

But if you’re looking for something on the sweeter side, they suggest the Greek hub of Oakleigh for Vanilla Upstairs and Nikos Oakleigh Quality Cakes, along with The Sweet Greek in South Yarra.

But the real star of the culinary list was chef, entrepreneur and Masterchef co-host George Calombaris, whose restaurants Hellenic Republic, Gazi and The Press Club all featured in the top 10.

Perhaps it’s a good night to give cooking a miss, and venture out to your favourite pick of the bunch.
