Panathinaikos confirmed its place in the Greek Cup Final after securing passage with a goal-less draw at PAS Ioannina on Wednesday.

The Greens advanced on 3-1 aggregate score thanks to its first leg win in Athens.

Panathiniakos will meet Aris in the final, the Macedonian side sure to improve on its 2008 Cup Final appearance when the side was beaten well by Olympiakos.

PAS Ioannina dominated the first half but could not translate their chances into goals.

Both their best two opportunities in the first 45 minutes were missed by Vangelis Kontogoulidis.

At the 31st minute Costas Mendrinos curled a free-kick into the box and Kontogoulidis tried a backward header that hit the crossbar.

A minute later Christos Tzanis sent a cross to the edge of the six-yard box, but Kontogoulidis’s glancing header went just wide of the post of a relieved Panathinaikos keeper Alexis Tzorvas.

The referee had to interrupt the game twice in the first half, the first due to flares hurled onto the pitch and the second because of the water sprinklers that malfunctioned ahead of the half time interval.

After the restart Panathinaikos were somewhat more contained in defence and threatened when they went forward, but again showed very little of the quality that has brought them close to a double this season.

There was no more than one decent chance for each team in the last 45 minutes of the game, that offered little in terms of goalmouth action.

At the 50th minute Costas Katsouranis tried a header that the PAS keeper dealt with successfully, while 14 minutes on it was Kontogoulidis again who missed the hosts’ best chance, heading the ball straight at Tzorvas’s hands.

Panathinaikos were left with 10 players seven minutes from time as Josu Sarriegi collected his second yellow card of the afternoon.

Seconds before the end of time added on Ilias Kotsios of PAS also got his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

The final will take place on Saturday, April 24 at the Olympic Stadium of Athens

Panathinaikos has now qualified for their 26th appearance in the Greek Cup final and will be looking to win their 17th Greek Cup.

Panathinaikos’s first Greek Cup win was in 1940 beating Aris 3-1, while their last appearance was in 2007 when they were beaten by Larissa 2-1 in a very memorable game in Thessalia.
