The Matildas have concluded their successful Rio Olympic Games campaign with a 1-1 draw against China, ensuring Australia finished Asia’s qualifiers in top spot.

A spectacular late equaliser from midfielder Emily Van Egmond secured the draw for the Rio-bound women’s team.

Both teams wrapped up Asia’s two qualification berths on Monday, but top spot in the competition was up for grabs in Osaka on Wednesday.

China scored on 16 minutes as Ma Xiaoxu directed a perfect header home amid wet and slippery conditions.

Australia made numerous changes from the side which defeated North Korea on Monday, and the Matildas turned in a relatively subdued performance by their recent high standards in their fifth outing in 10 days.

Matildas forward Caitlin Foord clipped the frame of the goal with a long-range effort early in the match, but goal-scoring opportunities were generally infrequent at either end.

The match came alive in the dying minutes, with Van Egmond hitting a spectacular 30-metre drive into the top corner to restore parity with just five minutes remaining.

There was still time for Australia goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, deputising for Lydia Williams, to be forced into a superb point-blank save, while at the other end, Lisa De Vanna failed to get her shot on target with only the keeper to beat in the final minute.
