The annual Dionysios Solomos Awards took place on Sunday 6 March at the University of Sydney as part of the 34th Greek Festival of Sydney.

The event was hosted by the University’s Department of Modern Greek and the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW.

NSW Higher School Certificate students were recognised for their outstanding achievements in Modern and Classical Greek.

Additionally, students of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW Afternoon and Saturday Schools were awarded with the Minister’s Award for their excellence in the Modern Greek language.

The event took place in the beautiful MacLaurin Hall, which was filled to capacity with the high-achieving students and their proud families.

It was wonderful to see students so enthusiastically connected with their culture. Student Constantina Samartzis, who placed first in both Modern Greek Continuers and Extension offered a word of thanks on behalf of the students and an impassioned speech on the significance of the study of the Greek language.
