To help mark the 15th anniversary of the Food For Thought Network’s (FFTN) contribution to women, organisers held an event to tackle the subject matter of ‘Women and Leadership’.

The Q&A discussion was a chance for attendees to put forward questions to the participating panel members, who all spoke of the various rewards and challenges of their political lives.

Moderated by Maria Dimopoulos, politicians taking part included Independent councillor at City of Manningham, Michelle Kleinert; Liberal Member of Parliament Dee Ryall; federal Member for Caldwell Maria Vamvakinou and Greens Senator for South Australia, Sarah Hanson-Young.

Coming from different walks of life and political affiliations, each woman was able to provide a different viewpoint, including insight into their lives, reasons for entering the political arena and tips on managing a work-life balance.

Reasons for choosing a career in politics ranged from a desire to provide better services, feelings of frustration at how things were being done, interest and concern for people around them, and passion for the country’s national character with regards to the treatment of the country’s most vulnerable communities.

Another popular topic tackled on the day was the dilemma of reconciling the ‘party line’ when not consistent with one’s own personal beliefs.

Responses for aptly dealing with such challenges were pragmatism, obligation, compromise, developing professional relationships and changing priorities.
By having the opportunity to take part in an open discussion on politics, organisers hoped to encourage more women to engage in politics and think about getting involved either at a local or federal level.

“It was suggested that by focusing or emphasising on the term ‘parliamentarian’ rather than ‘politician’, perhaps more women would be willing to become involved in ‘politics’,” said founder of the FFTN Varvara Athanasiou, who added that the event was “very rewarding”.

“Panellists were very encouraging of others’ involvement in the political scene. The event was enjoyed by all and it was a timely reminder of the pending elections both at the local council level and at the federal level,” she said.
