Just days after the shocking murder of North Hobart resident Voula Delios, the 68-year-old’s family has come face to face with her alleged killer.

The emotionally charged encounter took place on Wednesday morning, when Claremont resident Daryl Royston Wayne Cook made an appearance at the Hobart Magistrates Court.

While the meeting was brief, members of Mrs Delios’ family exchanged heated words with the 34-year-old, reports The Mercury.

Distraught and still in shock, the victim’s nephew expressed his despair outside the court.

“She works all her life, it’s unbelievable, she works all her life for her kids and grandkids,” he said.

At midday on Saturday, Mrs Delios was stabbed multiple times in broad daylight onsite her A and B Food Store, in what is suspected to have been an armed robbery gone wrong, reports the ABC.

The Greek Australian’s horrific death has been felt across the community, having operated her store for the past three decades and regarded an ‘institution’ in the area.

Local business owner Kelly Holmes remembered the late shop keeper for her friendly face and beautiful spirit, recalling the conversations she often had with her son Michael, with whom she operated the store.

“I can’t believe I have to walk past that store today and she won’t be in that window,” said Ms Holmes.

“The North Hobart strip will never be the same again – she was definitely a woman of strength – a hard worker.

“It’s affected a lot of people, all the regulars coming in, it’s all they are talking about.”

The beloved mother and grandmother migrated Down Under from Greece over 50 years ago. Remembered by all as a hard worker, despite losing her husband several years ago, she had persevered with her family in mind.

Well-known amongst Tasmania’s Greek community, President of Hobart’s Greek community George Giameos expressed his shock and passed on condolences to the family.

“The Greek community of Tasmania wishes to pass on its deepest sympathies and condolences to the Delios family on the sudden death and tragic passing of Voula, a well-respected and hardworking member of the Greek community,” he said.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time and we would like to offer our love, strength and support.”

Meanwhile, local North Hobart Uniting Church has extended its support for those affected by the death.

Minister Jeff Savage put out an open call for all those in need to go along and talk about how the news has affected them, or to simply light a candle.

Mr Cook is due back in court next month on 22 August, and has yet to enter a plea.
