Around 4.5 million voters; around 2,000 candidates; 260 individual elections; 78 councils; 637 councillors; 19 Greeks.

The 2016 local Victorian council elections are now behind us, and Greek Australians have every reason to be content, as they have gained even more representation, with the election of four additional councillors.

Nineteen candidates of Greek origin were newly or re-elected into local Victorian councils over the weekend − four more than the previous elections. In the ‘Greek’ suburb of Oakleigh Ward, Theo Zographos was first in votes, but is the only Greek retaining his seat in the suburb, although not where the council is concerned. Paul Klisaris also did well in the Mulrave Ward, as did his daughter Jami, who was re-elected in Stonnington Council’s North Ward.
