When in Athens, one must definitely pay The Clumsies a visit. This all day cocktail bar nestled in the most vibrant part of Greece’s capital opened its doors back in 2012 and since then it has been offering marvelous cocktails and gourmet delicacies in a stylish, welcoming space curated by Nine Design.

Various rooms and floors, an internal courtyard and atrium are separated with staircases made up of stone, marble and wood leading to the various levels. Vaults can be discerned behind the bar, the hallmark of its façade while The Room, a VIP space featuring a fireplace, a bookcase, a billiard table and vinyl LPs accommodates up to ten people who wish to experience a personalised and somewhat formal tasting.

Vassilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis, the awarded bartenders of The Clumsies, that have placed their “joint” amongst the world’s best bars share the belief that one should not only be judged by the impeccable execution of a recipe, but also by the way he connects with customers. However, their cocktails and dishes have been dubbed “the best Europe has to offer” many a time regardless of how many “whoops!” accompany the procedure. Apart from the extensive list of cocktails offered the bar serves an exclusive range of specialty coffee varieties is also on the menu, low alcohol drinks and non-alcoholic beverages closer to the philosophy of a proper cocktail. The Clumsies’ signature menu is prepared by Nikos Karathanos, an acclaimed Greek Chef who has also received a Michelin Star and changes twice a year, adapting to the seasonal availability of ingredients.

“A generous serving of favorite mistakes. Several droplets outside the shaker. Quite a few spatters on clothes and surfaces,” is their motto.

The Clumsies’ masterminds, Kyritsis and Bakoulis will be offering their knowledge in the art of mixology to Melbourne audiences on 25 November, as part of George Calombaris’ Oh My Greek Week (omgweek.com.au).
