The 20-year-old Greek Australian tennis player announced in social media earlier today in a tweet his decision to withdraw from the Australian Open which is scheduled to start on Monday at Melbourne Park, due to a stomach strain sustained last week at the Sydney International.

“Absolutely gutted to withdraw again from the best tournament in the world @AustralianOpen”, wrote on twitter the athlete who missed all the 2016 season due to a serious shoulder injury which required surgery in order for him to return to the courts in 2017.

“I just can’t seem to get my body right” Kokkinakis said adding the hashtag #soon to his tweet hoping that he will be able to get over this hurdle and return to at least compete in the doubles where he partnered with fellow Aussie athlete Jordan Thompson and won at the Brisbane International last month.

“Obviously, Jordan came up ‘what does this mean for the doubles?’ so I am still keen to play obviously, but I am going to take it day by day and see what the outcome is tomorrow and then go from there”, he said.

According to tournament director Craig Tilley, the South Australian player will be replaced by a “lucky loser” from the qualifying draw.
