Attendees at this year’s Lonsdale St Greek Festival are in for a treat, with the adored Greek songstress Glykeria taking to the stage to perform some of her much-loved hits.

This year will mark the singer’s third performance at the Antipodes Festival, and is only fitting, with 2017 marking the event’s 30th anniversary.

Recognised as one of Greece’s most important female singers, Glykeria’s career spans over three decades, having kicked off in 1974 in the Athenian Plaka boites. There she had the opportunity to distinguish herself by adding a unique interpretation to songs by composers like Hadjidakis, Theodorakis and Loizos and in 1978 released her first album Min Kaneis Oneira alongside rising artist Giorgos Gerolymatos.

But it was with her first solo album, Ta Smyrneika, that she really showcased her impeccable vocals and even managed to cause a stir in the music industry, with her focus on traditional songs from Asia Minor.

From then on the star was on a steady rise, and since then has also made a name for herself abroad in Israel, France, Turkey and England.

Also taking part in the Lonsdale St Greek Festival this year are the Stratakis Brothers from Crete. Known for their incredible vocal and lyre talents, they will be joined by a four-piece band on day two of the event.

Presented by the Greek Community of Melbourne, there will be three stages of free entertainment, plenty of delicious food and pop-up bars to try, along with cooking demonstrations, competitions, and children’s activities.
