Two students from Western Australia are in the running to attend the Premier’s ANZAC tour to Greece.
Scott Jones from Cape Naturaliste College and Hayley Winchcombe from Busselton Senior High School have made it to the top 20 students in the selection committee, with just 10 chosen for the trip, the Busselton Dunsborough Mail reported.
If the students make the cut to the top 10, they will join other students from WA travelling to Greece in late April to attend Anzac Day commemorations in Athens, before travelling to the island of Crete to learn more about the role the ANZAC forces played in Greece during World War II.
Year 9 student Hayley Winchcombe, who was selected from an essay competition, said the opportunity to see the memorials and take part in the celebrations would be a life-changing experience for her, as her grandparents and great-grandparents served in wars.
“There are 10 people selected, so 10 people miss out, whichever happens you have to live with that. But I would love to go to Greece – it would be an amazing opportunity,” Ms Winchcombe said.
The trip is an opportunity for young ambassadors to represent Western Australia at selected ANZAC commemoration events overseas.
The winners will be announced on November 11; Remembrance Day, with participation and preliminary finalist certificates forwarded to schools early in term four.
