Nia Vardalos is set to star as the mum in the new American Girl movie.
Vardalos told USA Weekend that she is really doing the movie for her daughter, who has no idea what her famous mum really does. “I’m looking to be a hero to my daughter. She is six and into the American Girl dolls. She is going to flip out when she hears I’m playing the mum,” Vardalos said.
The movie will start shooting next week in Vardalos’ hometown of Winnipeg. Larry Crowne, the movie Vardalos co-wrote with long-time collaborator Tom Hanks, is due for release. The movie, which stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, is a romantic comedy about a middle-aged man who loses his job and decides to go back to college.
“We started (writing) five years ago. This country was not exactly in the economic shape it is now. As we continued to work on the script, we felt a responsibility to correctly and responsibly depict the situation without making light of it but still make it a romantic comedy,” she said of Larry Crowne.
