Greek schools in Victoria received $22,300 in the latest grants offering by the Victorian government this week. Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras announced this week a total of $140,000 in grants to 85 community languages schools across Victoria.

The schools that received the funding are: AHEPA Victoria; Greek Orthodox Community of Frankston Inc.; Greek Orthodox Community of Oakleigh; Greek Orthodox Community of Oakleigh District; Greek Orthodox Community Parish of St Anathasios; Greek Orthodox Community of St Nicholas Yarraville; Greek Orthodox Community Parish of Coburg and Pascoe Vale; Omiros College; St Anthony Greek School; and two schools of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne Victoria.

“Learning languages other than English is important for developing an international perspective and building relationships with other nations,” Kotsiras said.

The funding, offered through the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship’s (OMAC) education grants program, will support voluntary after-hours community language schools. They will support and improve the quality of teaching and the professional development of staff.

The grants will also go towards new materials, resources and operational costs. “Community language schools build new generations of multilingual speakers while enhancing Victoria’s reputation as Australia’s multicultural capital,” Kotsiras said.
