Politicians couldn’t, the diaspora community is trying, and Germany, well who knows what happened to them, but if one man can save Greece from financial ruin then it’s Greek Australian Vangelis Dimas to the rescue.

Dubbed Greece’s very own Indiana Jones, Dimas has vowed to save Greece from bankruptcy by finding Ali Pasha’s hidden treasurers – rumoured to be worth 200 million euros – and using that to pay off Greece’s 300 billion euro debt. Lucky for Greece, Dimas is better at digging than math.

66-year-old Dimas is financing an excavation in Vassiliki, Trikala, southern Greece, to dig up the pasha’s hidden treasure. He believes that Ali Pasha’s hidden treasures were buried in the village named after his Greek-born wife.

This isn’t the first attempt to find the notorious pasha’s stash. Treasurer hunts in the northwest of Ioannina, where Ali Pasha ruled the Ottoman Empire from before his death, have proved fruitless in the past.

Dimas has received the necessary licences to do this excavation and has full permission from the Vassiliki Mayor, who says the state-approved operation is proceeding slowly but would likely continue for another couple of weeks.

The Greek state is entitled to 50 per cent of the finds, with the municipality taking a percentage. But all round good samaritan and saviour of Greece, Dimas has promised to give his share to the Bank of Greece.

If he is successful you can’t help but think that it could possibly be an Albanian’s money used to saved Greece. Stick that in you argile and smoke it!
