Pop the champagne and gorge on the caviar; the new iPhone has been announced!

Well, not quite. Rather than the hugely anticipated iPhone 5, Apple have taken an interim step by launching what they’re calling the iPhone 4S. The product comes with a bunch of the latest enhancements including a new camera, better processor, a boosted operating system and iCloud integration capabilities.

So what’s the Apple hype machine pushing as the prominent feature this time round? Virtual Assistant capabilities. Yep, the new iPhone includes voice control technology called Siri Assistant which uses voice recognition to populate your calendar, compose emails and text messages, and store reminders or shopping lists.

This type of feature has been around Android for some time, but Apple believes they will do it better by ensuring it is completely integrated with the entire iOS and core apps. I must admit, the thought of never having to type another memo on my smartphone sounds very cool.

The product is scheduled to launch in Australia on 14 October. I wonder how many Apple tragics will pack their thermos and sleeping bag and spend three nights on the hard footpath of their local retailer just to get their hands on the iPhone 4S?
