The rate of unemployment has risen drastically and is at 18.4 per cent as of August this year, up 12.2 per cent from the same time last year.

As the country’s financial woes deepen, the number of jobless is nearing the millions. Over 907,950 people were registered as jobless in August, said the Hellenic Statistical Authority (Elstat).

They also stated that the number of people with jobs have been overtaken over by the nation’s pensioners and dependants.

Elstat said 4,034,537 persons were employed while 4,403,503 were inactive. This number exacerbates the pressure on those working and paying taxes to aid the country’s financial problems.

Youth unemployment was at an all-time high of 43.5 per cent in August, up 30.8 per cent from the same time last year.
