The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus have come closer to an agreement on opening a crossing point at Limnitis following their meeting on Thursday.

The opening of a crossing at Liminitis will facilitate movement to and from the northern Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

The President of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, met face face-to-face for three hours during which they continued discussion on the Limnitis and on the economy.

Christofias said on Thursday that he expected good news soon regarding the opening of a crossing point in Limnitis.

Speaking after his meeting with Talat, Christofias said: “We had a good meeting today, we moved forward concerning Limnitis.

“We are not far from an agreement and I expect soon to have good news,” he added.

Christofias said that during their meeting they had also expressed their views regarding territorial issues and that they will continue discussions on that issue at their meeting today (Monday).

UNSG’s Special Advisor for Cyprus, Alexander Downer, will not be present at today’s meeting as he will be in Moscow.

Downer will come to Cyprus on Tuesday.

The two leaders have met 32 times since the start of the discussions.
