THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF GEORGE DEVINE TRELOAR MEMORIAL STATUE

This year marks the third anniversary of the unveiling of the George Devine Treloar Memorial Statue in Ballarat celebrated by the Merimna Pontion Kyrion of Oceania club.

This Memorial signifies our recognition of the refugee work of George Treloar, an Australian soldier and son of Ballarat, who assisted over 100,000- Christian refugees in the re settlement in Northern Greece from their homes across Pontus and Asia Minor in the early 1920s.

Everyone is welcome to attend the official wreath laying ceremony, followed by speeches and dance performance by the Pontiaki Estia dance group.

UNKNOWN PLEASURES – TRIBUTE TO IVAN GAAL

A series of regular screenings featuring the best of Australian independent cinema, both classic and contemporary, presented in conjunction with the film-makers. The series is co-curated and presented by Chris Luscri & Bill Mousoulis, with assistance from Colin Hodson, at the Thornbury Picture House. This month Thornbury Picture House pays tribute to one of Melbourne’s living legends of independent cinema, Ivan Gaal, who migrated to Australia from Hungary in the 1950s, and got involved with the Melbourne Filmmakers Co-op among other groups in the ’70s, and now has a body of work behind him 50 years long. A special night, with a Q&A moderated by Jake Wilson from The Age.

I heart Artemis is a story about a mythological love and a very real crisis, which asks the most pressing questions about humanity’s future. The Consort of Melbourne is a vocal ensemble that champions both historic and contemporary repertoire. The Australian premiere of a ground-breaking new piece by award-winning composer Wally Gunn and librettist Maria Zajkowski. I heart Artemis is a concert-length reimagining of Greek mythology told through a series of scenes and tableaus rendered in glorious six-part vocal harmony.

OAKLEIGH TRAILS – THE GREEK FOOD WALKING TOUR

The much anticipated Oakleigh Trail; a 40-minute walk along the restaurant and café-bar precinct of the most Greek suburb in Melbourne begins. REBETIKO CARAVAN @ GREEK FRINGE

Straight from the source, Fotis Vergopoulos is coming to down under to perform three unique shows in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney! Leading this all-star line-up of local and inter-state musicians, Fotis represents the next generation of talent from Greece and his musicianship and feel for rebetika is inimitable. Fotis was initiated into the world of music at the age of six by his father, Nikos, an inaugural member of the Apodimi Kompania. He has toured Europe extensively as well as Africa, Australia and New Zealand. He currently lives in Athens where he has performed with many notable artists including Agathonas Iakovidis, Martha Fritzila, Babis Gkoles and Manolis Pappos to name a few. Joining Fotis on stage are special guests and stalwarts of the Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne rebetika scene.

Paola, Greece’s most entertaining contemporary laika artist, known not only for her vocal skills but her passion on stage, is coming to Australia in September.

The famous Greek singer he will grace the stage at the newly renovated Enmore Theatre on 16 September with her own full band and her current two support acts Anastasios Rammos and Christina Salti giving us their entire show supported by spectacular lighting and sound effects.

Paola will then fly to Melbourne for a performance at the Q Room on 17 September and another live gig on 23 September (0437 888 085 for bookings and tables).

Written by Euripides, translated by Anne Carson, directed by Matt Edgerton, Orestes comes to life again at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), performed by 2nd year acting students. Orestes has killed his mother to avenge her murder of his father. Now he is being driven mad by the Furies, and there are calls for him and his sister-in-crime, Elektra, to be executed. Desperate, they dream up a harebrained scheme to save their lives. Acclaimed translator Anne Carson breathes exhilarating new life into this ancient Greek tale with her sharply modern take on Euripides’ darkly comic tragedy. The play contains adult themes and violence and is open for ages 12+.
